Position Summary:
Join our team at the EcoTarium, where we spark curiosity and inspire a passion for nature and science through hands-on exhibits, live animals, and engaging programs.
As the Camp Director, you will lead the design, planning, and implementation of the EcoTarium’s recreational camp program for campers ages 5 – 15. This position directly supports the EcoTarium’s mission to inspire a passion for science and nature, and reports to the Manager of Educational Programs. The Camp Director will be scheduled up to 40 hours per week March – May 2026, dependent on candidate availability and organizational needs. Required 40 hours per week June – August 2026, Monday – Friday, 8:15 am – 4:45 pm with a 30 minute daily unpaid lunch break.
Essential Functions:
- Lead the organization and implementation of day-to-day camp activities.
- Supervise and monitor camp program staff including interviewing, hiring, training, and daily supervision.
- Serve as a main point of contact between the camp program and EcoTarium staff.
- In partnership with the Manager of Educational Programs, lead the interviewing and hiring process for summer camp staff.
- Process and review camper health documentation and resources.
- Maintain open communication and build relationships with caregivers in person, over the phone, and via email throughout the camp season.
- In partnership with the Manager of Educational Programs, oversee compliance and licensing for the EcoTarium’s recreational camp programs.
- Foster a physically and emotionally safe environment for all campers and staff.
- Manage camper safety and behavior management in a positive and constructive way.
- Ensure that all campers and staff are having fun throughout the program.
- Bring out the best in camp staff through coaching, mentoring, and leading by example.
- Provide an exceptional customer service experience by proactively problem-solving and communicating issues and solutions with camp staff, campers, and caregivers.
- Deliver indoor and outdoor programming and navigate trails in a variety of weather conditions.
- Set up and maintain field gear, program materials, technical equipment, program spaces, and supplies.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Participate actively (virtually or in person) in staff meetings, daily huddles, and staff training
- Work collaboratively with EcoTarium staff on museum-wide and cross-departmental initiatives
- Contribute to a professional, motivational, and collaborative work environment by encouraging teamwork and providing positive reinforcement to team members when a job is well done.
- Serve on staff ad-hoc committees when needed.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
- At least 21 years of age
- At least two seasons of experience working as part of the administrative staff of a recreational camp for children and/or successful completion of a course in camping administration
- Experience as a camp counselor, teacher, or other supervisory role with children
- Interest in and/or experience working with diverse audiences
- Demonstrated success working both independently and as part of a team
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and highly dependable
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
- Effective communication skills
- Comfort with presentation and/or public speaking
- Willingness to learn and grow through constructive feedback
- Certified in CPR/First Aid or be willing to take a CPR/First Aid course
- Documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and completion of the camp’s health forms and waivers before the start of training
- Ability to navigate the building and grounds under any weather conditions, lift and transport up to 25 lbs., and work in a highly sensory and stimulating work environment due to constant interaction with guests
- Pass CORI and SORI background checks
An ideal candidate will have:
- Experience with and/or interest in staff training and development
- Experience with customer service and communication with caregivers
- Background in life science, earth science, astronomy, engineering, and/or physical science
- Experience with inquiry-based and/or experiential learning
- Experience leading or assisting programming at a science camp or museum
- A flair for public presentation
- Demonstrated ability to have fun with kids
