ABOUT THE FILM
Embark on an 87-minute journey with the award-winning documentary film, In the Whale (2023). This gripping narrative follows Cape Cod lobster diver Michael Packard, who survived being swallowed by a humpback whale. Yet, beyond the incredible tale of survival lies a profound narrative—a poignant exploration of what transpired in the life of the fisherman after being pushed into the international spotlight, and the quieter battles he faced once the attention waned.
At its core, In the Whale (2023) is a love story—a testament to the enduring bond between a fisherman and the sea, and a father’s unwavering devotion to his family. Witness how Packard’s love for the ocean and his family not only sustained him during his ordeal with the whale but also empowered him to confront another adversary: depression.
Packard’s encounter with the whale captured the attention of media outlets worldwide, including features in The New York Times and The Washington Post.
ABOUT FILMMAKER DAVID ABEL
An award-winning reporter, documentary filmmaker, and professor of journalism, David Abel has covered war in the Balkans, unrest in Latin America, national security issues in Washington D.C., terrorism in New York and Boston, and climate change and poverty throughout New England.
A longtime reporter at The Boston Globe, Abel is also a professor of the practice in the journalism department at Boston University.
Abel and his colleagues at the Globe won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. His films have been broadcast on the Discovery Channel, PBS, BBC World News, and other major platforms, winning numerous awards. His most recent film, “Entangled,” won a Jackson Wild award, known as the Oscars of nature films, and was nominated for a national Emmy. Abel’s work has also won an Edward R. Murrow award, the Ernie Pyle award from the Scripps Howard Foundation, and Sigma Delta Chi awards for feature reporting and climate reporting.
