The Pillars of Modern Cosmology
Modern cosmology, or the standard cosmological model as it is more commonly known, has been established in the last 25 years. Precision measurements of cosmological parameters refined our understanding of the composition and dynamics of the universe. However, the more we learn about the universe, the more mysterious it appears. Professor Koushiappas will discuss the fundamental measurements that led to the standard cosmological model and briefly give an overview of some of the most fascinating problems of current research in cosmology.
Professor Koushiappas is a faculty member in the Department of Physics at Brown University. His area of research is in the interconnection between astro-particle physics and cosmology. In addition to teaching and supervising PhD students, he is the author of more than 60 publications, and has received research awards from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and NASA. Before moving to Brown in 2008, he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. In his spare time he enjoys using his small backyard telescopes to look at the night sky, taking photographs, playing and listening to music, and traveling and spending time with his family.
