Did you know insects make up the largest percentage of the world’s known species? We think that’s something to celebrate! Embrace what bugs you as we identify these amazing creatures up close, learn fun facts, dress up in life-like costumes, create beautiful art and even learn to dance like your favorite arthropods!
Scheduled Activities:
10:00 - 12:00 pm - Make & Take Art—Honeybee Tessellations
Celebrate insect artist-engineers and create a colorful geometric hive collage inspired by the amazing hexagonal shape of a honeycomb.
11:00 - 11:30 am - Guided Insect Walk
Join a museum educator on a guided nature walk to search our grounds for some awesome insects, from ants to zoraptera!
12:00 - 12:30 pm - Insect Story Time
12:15 - 2:15 pm - Make & Take Art—Butterfly and Moth Masks
Design a mask inspired by the symmetry and wing patterns found in local moths and butterflies!
1:00 - 1:30 pm - Insect or Not?
Do you know what makes an insect an insect? Meet several of the EcoTarium’s resident creepy crawlies and learn the difference between insects, arachnids, millipedes, and more!
2:00 - 2:30 pm - Guided Insect Walk
Join a museum educator on a guided nature walk to search our grounds for some awesome insects, from ants to zoraptera!
Ongoing Activities:
Insect Investigation Station
How many different types of insects can you find? Explore the EcoTarium grounds, then bring what you find to the Insect Investigation Station. Examine insects up close using hand lenses and magnifying boxes, then sketch and color your six-legged friends with provided art supplies!
Insect Theater
Do you know the insect boogie? What about the waggle dance? Join us on the Music and Movement Stage where you can try on a costume, make some noise with a musical instrument, and shake a leg (or six) like your favorite creepy crawlies!
