Summary
The Manager of Human Resources at the EcoTarium works collaboratively with the President and CEO, Director of Finance and Business Operations, senior leadership, and the Board of Trustees to ensure the organization maintains a well-trained, motivated, and engaging workforce aligned with the museum’s mission and strategic goals.
This role as a human resource generalist is responsible for the full employee life cycle, including recruitment, onboarding, employee and labor relations, compensation and benefits administration, training and recognition programs, workforce development, Employee and Labor Relations, compliance, and payroll-related functions. The Manager of Human Resources develops and implements HR policies and practices, supports organizational committees, and fosters a positive, inclusive, and service-oriented workplace culture. Confidentiality, professionalism, and strong interpersonal skills are essential to this role.
Essential Functions
- Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulation and ensure organizational compliance
- Develop, implement, and communicate HR policies, procedures, and directives that promote fairness and consistency
- Develop and communicate new policies, information, and directives to employees
- Manage HR budget and vendor relationships
- Support the President & CEO in matters related to EEO, MCAD, unemployment, wage and hour, worker’s compensation, OSHA, ADA, and immigration compliance
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records and HR filing systems
- Complete SORI, CORI, and background checks as needed
- Support bi-weekly payroll processing
- Manage HRIS and payroll system setup, maintenance, and accuracy
- Partner with managers to ensure accurate timekeeping and attendance reporting
- Manage full-cycle recruitment for staff including sourcing, screening, reference checks, and offers
- Lead the onboarding and off-boarding processes
- Build and maintain relationships with schools, community partners, and local organizations
- Coordinate new hire orientation sessions, company-wide trainings, and mandatory monthly community meetings
- Participate in recruitment outreach events as needed
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers through an open-door approach
- Address employee concerns and workplace issues with discretion, objectivity, and professionalism
- Monitor employee morale and proactively address organizational changes impacting staff
- Coordinate employee appreciation and recognition initiatives
- Ensures staff communication boards are current, engaging, and informative
- Monitor labor activity and interpret union contracts to ensure compliance with applicable laws and agreements
- Represent the organization, in partnership with leadership and labor counsel, in labor-related matters including negotiations, grievances, and arbitration
- Coordinate and support the HR Personnel Committee, the DEIA Committee and participate in the Safety Committee.
- Administer employee benefit programs, including enrollments, changes, and terminations
- Coordinate and manage Open Enrollment
- Administer FMLA and PFMLA programs
- Administer and manage benefits enrollments, terminations and changes
- Support employee participation in the 403(b) retirement program
- Administer PTO eligibility, tracking, and payouts
- Monitor and track performance evaluations and employee status changes (new hires, promotions, transfers, and separations)
- Other duties as assigned
Non-Essential Functions
- Participate actively (virtually or in person) in staff meetings, daily huddles, and staff trainings
- Contribute to a professional and motivational work environment by encouraging teamwork and providing positive reinforcement to team members when a job is well done.
- Work collaboratively with staff and management on museum-wide and cross-departmental initiatives
- Support special events, evening or weekend programming, and museum-wide initiatives as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree; PHR/SHRM certifications preferred
- Minimum of five years of progressive HR generalist experience
- Experience with HRIS systems
- Knowledge of labor relations and unionized environments
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgement, maintain composure, and manage sensitive situations with discretion
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate, prevent, identify, and resolve workplace issues
- Strong listening skills with the ability to assess concerns and escalate appropriately to senior leadership
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse stakeholders
- Commitment to confidentiality, equity, and inclusive workplace practices
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays based on the museum needs
- Pass CORI, SORI, and background checks according to EcoTarium’s guidelines
Physical Requirements:
- Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
