THRILLS AND CHILLS: ECOTARIUM’S FREE COMMUNITY DAY BRINGS THE USA LUGE TEAM TO WORCESTER, WITH RECORD-BREAKING MUSEUM ATTENDANCE!

Worcester, MA, February 18, 2025 – The EcoTarium welcomed over 2,700 excited visitors on Monday, February 17, 2025, for a Free Admission Community Day, made possible through the generous support of Norton | Saint-Gobain. Families and guests of all ages took advantage of a full day of hands-on science, nature exploration, and a special luge experience with the USA Luge Team making it a highlight of February Vacation Week.
The EcoTarium inspires the next generation of scientists and engineers through interactive experiences, like the luge. “The USA Luge Team and Norton | Saint-Gobain worked during the past few days to build a luge sledding track at the EcoTarium for children and adults”, said EcoTarium President and CEO Noreen Smith. “I took a fun ride on the luge sled and proved Newton’s Second Law of Motion – the bigger you are, the slower you accelerate”, joked Smith.
“Through partnerships with local businesses like Norton | Saint-Gobain, we can showcase how science and engineering drive success in a variety of fields—including sports. The technology behind world-class luge equipment is a perfect example of how STEM careers intersect with passion and performance”, said EcoTarium Director of Education and Exhibits Katie Chappell, Director of Education & Exhibits.
“We are thrilled to support this community-focused event, combining our passion for STEM opportunities for youth and our love for the fastest sport on ice,” said Melanie Bonsu, Community Relations Manager, Saint-Gobain Abrasives. “As the lead sponsor for USA Luge, we hope that bringing the team to the EcoTarium will provide an unforgettable experience and an appreciation for the sport of luge.”
The Norton Luge Challenge gave visitors the opportunity to try out the sport of luge under the expert guidance of the USA Luge Team international medalists and coaches. Participants used easy-to-maneuver plastic sleds in a safe, slope-side setting. Helmets were provided to ensure a fun and safe experience for all. Adding to the high-energy atmosphere, the USA Luge DJ kept the excitement going with upbeat music throughout the event.
During the Free Admission Day sponsored by Norton | Saint-Gobain, visitors also enjoyed full access to the museum’s interactive science exhibits, planetarium shows, and special February Prehistoric Planet Vacation Week Programming, making for an unforgettable day of learning about our planet’s history and its incredible creatures.
